Resource Base

The discovery of the Mangala field in January 2004 was the largest onshore oil find in India in more than 20 years. Since then, the Rajasthan resource base has continuously grown to a current 4 billion barrels of oil. A total of 148 Mangala development wells have been drilled to date, of which 96 are complete and 64 are currently producing. This resource base provides a combined potential production of 240,000 barrels of oil per day, subject to the necessary investment and approvals.

Cairn's focus going forward is to realise the full potential of the Barmer basin.

Production

Cairn has taken Mangala from discovery to production in five years. First oil flowed in August 2009 in a ceremony attended by the Indian Prime Minister, the honourable Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Cairn is developing the Mangala, Bhagyam and Aishwariya fields in phases with Trains One, Two and Three now complete. Construction activities for Train Four have commenced and are on track for delivery in H2 2011.

The Mangala Processing Terminal has a current approved peak plateau production of 125,000 barrels of oil per day contibuting more than 20% to India's current domestic oil production.

Size and Scale

The Rajasthan project is one of the largest oil and gas developments in India. The Mangala Processing Terminal (MPT) covers an area equivalent to 200 football pitches and includes oil, gas, power and water infrastructure. Approximately 600 km of the export pipeline has been laid to date and is operational with the final Salaya to Bhogat section targeted for completion in H2 2012. At an eventual length of 670 km, the pipeline will provide access to more than 75% of India's refining capacity. It is the world's longest continuously heated and insulated pipeline.

At the peak of construction, approximately 16,000 workers were involved: 5,000 on the pipeline and 11,000 on the MPT. Cairn has achieved discovery to production in five years.

MPT Pipe Racks

There are 5 km of pipe racks with 210 km of piping and 3,100 km of instrumentation cables and electrical cables throughout the MPT.
